The Evil of Dustanas(Part II)

$

According to a booklet by Sri Ganapati Muni of Sri Ramanashram, when Saturn, the worst malefic, owns a good house and bad house, his inherent malefic swabhava or nature inclines him to inflict the evil of his bad lordship, rather than give the good of his good lordship, unless he occupies, say Capricorn, the 5th for Virgo Ascendant, or Aquarius, the 9th for Gemini Ascendant, or becomes the lunar lord or Chandra Lagnadhipati. Similarly, Mars, as lord of the 6th (and the 11th) for Gemini or the 3rd and the 8th for Virgo may be in the 3rd or the 8th or the 12th. But I cannot and do not subscribe to the theory that Mars, lord of the 10th, may be in the 6th in Neecha. For I have known of a case of an Aquarian engineer-officer being dismissed as in his chart Venus (lord of the 9th) and Mars (lord of the 10th) were in the 6th in Cancer, and in the 12th from the lord of Ascendant, Saturn, strong in the 7th but a bit bad in Leo!!

Thus, theoretical knowledge, ample and rich experience and God-given intuition are needed to enable one to make correct predictions — frank but not false and flattering ones.

The lords of the 6th, the 8th and the 12th are responsible for all the ills and miseries of life. The 12th leads to over-eating and over enjoyment causing ailments and diseases denoted by the 6th house; and diseases in turn lead to death, which, in the words of Alfred Tennyson, "closes all". Similarly, the 12th lord causes expenditure leading to debts denoted by the 6th house, which may lead to disgrace and dishonor connoted by the 8th house and its lord. Kerala scholars and texts say that the 8th and the 8th lord are the worst of all - thatra athi kastostamah. For, if the 8th is vacant or occupied by a natural benefic and its lord is weak and the Ascendant and the lord of the Ascendant are stronger than the 8th lord even in cases where a strong 6th lord shows the existence of debts and enemies "out to cause the native trouble", the native escapes disgrace and dishonor.

An Assistant Public Prosecutor was born in Leo Ascendant with Jupiter in the 6th in debility, the Moon in the 10th in Taurus with Saturn and Venus. He was in deep trouble. And, a professional astrologer opined that Jupiter's aspect on the 10th and on the 10th lord would save him' But. I doubted, for, Jupiter lord of the 5th i the 5th being Moolatrikona) was rather weak in the 6th in debility, even though Saturn in Chandra Lagna might afford some Neechabanga. Kalkiasa in his Uttarakalamrita states,
Baalo vriddhe khago astha gascha vijitah pasyanna pasyatyasau Par- anihyevakhagaah ucche swayechauttamaah
meaning, that a planet in infancy or old age (Avastha  or in combustion (by the Sun) or defeated in planetary war is ineffective in its aspect for. It is as if the planet did not aspect. Only planets in their own houses or in exaltation are powerful and effective in their aspects.

I would add, the aspecting planets must also be well placed in a house other than the 6th or the 8th or the 12th and preferably in a Kendra or an Upachayastana (the 11th or to some extent at least the 3rd). Saturn, lord of the 6th and the 7th, a bad and baneful Maraka for Leo and a bitter enemy of the Sun, lord of the Ascendant , is in the 10th. Such a Saturn in the 10th makes even an American President's (Nixon) fate totter and hang in the balance, despite Venus, lord of the 10th in the 7th, and Saturn, lord of the 7th, (and the 6th) in the 10th. In this chart, the position is worsened by the bad exchange of planets between lord of the 10th Venus in the 12th and the lord of the 12th Moon in the 10th. Though, according to the evidence on record, the native could have been acquitted, yet, the disciplinary tribunal somehow found him guilty, and the Government simply accepted and acted on its findings. So, the poor man was dismissed, after several years of service!!. Such is the misfortune caused by the lord of the 10th in the 12th, the lord of the 12th in the 10th, the lord of the 6th in the 10th and the lord of the 5th in the 6th..

Another native[Rasi : Taurus - Ascendant; Leo - the Moon; Libra - S Jupiter; Capricorn - Venus and Mars; and Aries - Kent] was born to inherit substantial property and has a long life - he is over 73 years. See lord of Ascendant in the 9th and Mars, lord of the 12th , in exaltation in the 9th.
Jataka Parijatha says,
Lagneth anthyagrihadhipo balayuthe swarthe chirayur sukhi
meaning, that if the lord of the 12th is strong, the native has wealth, comforts and long life.

The rationale is that the 12th house indicates Moksha or hell; and, for reaching either (gradually) one must perform ample good or bad Karma (or deeds)" and that is possible, only when one lives long.rBut, this long-lived one is an oversexed man, due to close conjunction of Venus and Mars in a house of Saturn. So he was so prodigal due to wayward habits that he was prevailed upon to settle all his properties in favour of his wife for life, to be taken after her by her four daughters, as their only son died very young. (Mark Mercury lord of the 5th and Jupiter in the 8th with a combust Saturn). The son-in-law took a release, deed from her, purporting to efface herself and surrender her life interest to her daughters if the daughters maintained her and was paid cash of Rs. 10,000/-. As the cash did come to her, there was a decree giving a life interest to her and her husband (the native) who sued, as plaintiffs, to be enjoyed without any powers of encumbrance or alienation, to be taken equally and absolutely, by the four daughters, after the lifetime of both the plaintiffs. But the native of the horoscope sold two shops and another item of property to pay his old concubine, with the result, that, naturally, the daughters are now about to take action against him to prevent alienation to speculative transferees in order to safeguard their own interests and for contempt of court.

The horoscope is a typical case of the evil of Trikas and Trika-lords. For, Venus in the 9th is much more the lord of the 6th (as Libra is his Moolatrikona) than the lord of the Ascendant. In fact while Mars for Aries and Venus for Libra are deemed generally good, Mars for Scorpio Ascendant and Venus for Taurus are not so good, as the 6th lordship would dominate, unless the Ascendant lord is with a Yogakaraka or the lord of the 2nd and the 5th or the lord of the 9th. Similarly, Mars lord of the 7th and the 12th is more the lord of the 12th as Aries is the Moolatrikona house of Mars. And, in addition to two Trika lords of the 6th and the 12th in the 9th, the lords of the 4th, the 5th (and the 2nd) and the 9th and the 10th and the 11th are in the 8th house, the worst house. So, the native, despite being saved, invites trouble, dispossession and dishonor! For, Phaladeepika says that the 8th lord if strong, is responsible for Swayamritha avarthaparampara, that is, a vicious circle of self-created troubles.

Barren Signs and Denial of Marriage-part 1

I would like to define marriage as the socio-religious sanction accorded to a man and a woman to give expression to the natural instinct of propagation and with a view to start a family in accordance with the mores and cultural values of the community to which one belongs and for its welfare and prosperity. This paper attempts to examine each aspect of this definition astrologically and work out practical norms to explain and predict the extent to which this definition finds expression in a given horoscope.

The basic components of this definition are that marriage:-
(a) Has to be a social ceremony;
(b) Should have religious sanction; and
(c) Should be accepted by both families and the community.

Marriage involving religious sanction, the 9th house is clearly important. Two people coming together are denoted by the Ascendant or the 1st house and the 7th (partner). People at large are also denoted by the 7th house and to that extent it is very important.

Marriage is aimed at enabling the couple set up a family and hence the 4th house becomes important. The family unit builds up an ambiance of relations and hence, the 2nd house enters the picture. This unit gets into an environment of relations and neighbours and hence, the 3rd house. Finally, the ceremony changes the status of the two people involved and as such, the 10th house becomes relevant. Besides, the 11th house, the house of aspirations and friendship, is very closely connected with marriage. It thus becomes evident that almost the entire horoscope has to be studied.

The left out houses denote the negative factors that would mark the marriage and these are the 6th, 8th and 12th houses. The only remaining house, namely, the 5th is really of paramount importance because, besides denoting the expression of libido, it also denotes the very purpose of the marriage, that is propagation. The important point that I want to drive home is that while examining the question of marriage we should study the entire horoscope and not merely the 7th house. This paper, therefore, attempts to crystallize in precise terms the answers to the most common questions an astrologer faces while examining the subject of marriage.

The first and the most important point an astrologer should examine is whether the native will marry at all and this is no easy task. Let us therefore, first examine this question.

Classification of Signs
Firstly examine the distribution of planets in signs classified as fruitful or otherwise. The 12 signs of the Zodiac can be classified as:-

Fruitful - Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces
Semi-fruitful - Taurus, Libra and Aquarius.
Semi-barren - Aries, Sagittarius and Capricorn.
Barren - Gemini, Leo and Virgo.

In the preliminary analysis take into account all the planets including the shadowy planets Rahu, Ketu and Mandi. If the majority of planets are in fruitful and semi-fruitful signs, then the chances of marriage are more. If two-thirds of the factors are so placed, it is almost certain marriage will take place. If the converse factors are stronger, then marriage is not possible.

Relevant Planets
After this preliminary examination, we have to examine certain planets more carefully now. They are the Sun, Moon, Mars, Venus, Jupiter, lords" of the Ascendant, planets in the Ascendant, lords of Nakshatras in which the Ascendant, the Ascendant lord and those occupying the Ascendant are situated in. Similarly, examine the 7th house, the planets therein and the mid-point of the 7th house.
Chart 1

The 7th lord Saturn is in the 7th in Aquarius in Chart 1. The mid-point of the 7th is obviously 20° 16' Aquarius. The sign Leo is barren, the lord of the Ascendant Sun is in Virgo, barren again. The Ascendant degree and its mid-point fall in Poorvaphalguni ruled by Venus who is in Leo, a barren sign. Venus is also in the same Nakshatra whose lord again is Venus himself placed in Leo, a barren sign. The Nakshatra of the mid-point of the 7th and that occupied by the 7th lord Saturn is the same Satabhisha, whose lord Rahu is in Sagittarius, which is a semi-barren sign. But Saturn and the 7th mid-point are in Aquarius which is a semi-fruitful sign.

Mars and Jupiter are in Scorpio in a fruitful sign. Jupiter is in Visakha whose lord is Jupiter himself placed in a fruitful sign. Mars is in Jyeshta whose lord Mercury is in Libra, a semi- fruitful sign. The Moon is in Aries, a barren sign. He is in Aswini ruled by Ketu, who in turn is in Gemini, a barren sign. Now count the score. You will find that barren and semi-barren signs dominate even after taking into account the position of the lord of the Nakshatra of the Sun, namely, Mars who is in Scorpio, a fruitful sign. This chart is of a male native who never married.

After you have made this two-fold examination you will have a fairly good idea whether one will marry or not. After that, if you find the dominance of barren and semi-barren signs in the first two examinations then check, in both male and female horoscopes, the position of the Ascendant lord, planets in the 7th, Venus and the luminaries. In the case of a female chart, particular attention should be paid to Mars as he indicates more about the marital position. In the case of men, check carefully on the position of the Moon and Venus. Saturn is the main planet indicating delay or denial and his position should be examined carefully.

Barren Signs and Denial of Marriage - Part 2

Continued from : Barren Signs and Denial of Marriage - Part 1
Role of Saturn
Saturn in the 7th house does not mean delay or denial. I have seen many horoscopes when Saturn in the 7th has hastened marriage. However, Saturn's aspect on the 7th, 7th lord Moon and Venus can cause delay or denial. In Chart 1, Saturn  not only occupies the Nakshatra whose lord is in a barren sign but he severely afflicts the Moon,Venus, Mars and Jupiter. In the case of females, if Saturn afflicts the Sun, Mars, Moon, Venus and the lord of the 7th and the above two examinations show dominance of barren signs and Saturn is placed in a Nakshatra whose lord is in a barren sign, then chances of getting married are remote. While examining a horoscope for marriage it is absolutely necessary to get an over all idea of the life span of the person, otherwise after predicting marriage the person may not live to marry at all.

Chart 2: Male: Born August 13, 1954 at 6h. 00m. at 18 N 58, 72 E 50.

Chart 2

The native of Chart 2 came to see me in March 1986 about his marriage. I got the feeling that his life was short and so I advised him to wait till after May 1986. The young man die in May that year.

Factors Against Marriage
Deficiencies
There is, yet another point I need to stress here. It is also necessary for an astrologer to locate serious deficiencies in the personality and certain severe handicaps and deformities which could make married life difficult or impossible. These are»impotency, imbecility or severe mental retardation and stark lunacy. No doubt in the first and last cases marriage is still possible, though it may not be a success, but in case the person is an idiot or imbecile marriage is just not possible. Let us, therefore, see how far it is possible to locate these major defects from the horoscope. In case of impotency, one has to be very careful before pronouncing verdict.

Impotency
The 17th degree of Gemini is very important in this context. If the Ascendant is in this degree or close to it and the positions detailed below are also present then there is every danger of impotency. Venus and Mercury in an angle in conjunction and Mars and Saturn both elevated above Venus tend to produce an eunuch or hermaphrodite. Venus and Saturn in the 4th house severely afflicted should also bring about the same results due to lack of proper sex channels. In a female horoscope if Mercury is the lord of the 7th house from the Moon and the Ascendant is in the Trimsamsa of Saturn and in addition to that, Saturn is with Mercury with no benefic aspect whatsoever on the 7th house, then there is danger of the woman getting married to a sexually impotent man. Also Saturn in the 7th in the Navamsa of Saturn in a similar position may also bring about the same results provided, Saturn as well as Mercury are both devoid of any aspect of benefics. If the factors denoting an eunuch are also supported by the factors showing denial of marriage, then such a person may not marry at all.

Venus in an angle from Saturn and Mars ascending after Venus and configurated with the Sun and Mercury shows some defect in private organs which could affect sex life adversely. The Sun, Moon and Venus in masculine signs and the Moon waning, then the male native is born with some serious injury in the private parts, especially if signs Aries, Leo, Scorpio, Capricorn or Aquarius are prominently involved. In such cases, females are likely to remain childless.

In the case of a man, the 7th and Venus are principle indicators of sexual life. If the sign Libra, the 7th house, 7th lord and Venus are all weak and debilitated and Venus is 1° away from the Sun, then the man is likely to be sexually ineffective. If lord of the 7th is with Venus in the 6th house or the Ascendant lord is aspected by Venus, the 6th lord as well as by Mercury  or severely afflicted Venus is in the 8th, then also one is likely to be impotent.

Mental Retardation
In case of mental retardation or idiocy there are certain degrees of the Zodiac which are very sensitive. These are 0° to 3° and 22° to 25° of common signs. If planets denoting mind development in a horoscope get severely afflicted in these degrees the chances of mental retardation would be very great. Chart 3 is of a female whose mind development is of a small child. She becomes very violent at times and during these spells, bangs her head on anything. As a result, she has suffered many injuries on her head so far. If has become a major problem for her parents. Now can such a girl develop sufficiently to marry at the appropriate age? Such factors have to be examined before any pronouncement on the question of marriage is made.

Chart 3: Female: Born December 22, 1983 at 9h. 35m at 28 N 39, 77 E 13.
Chart 3

You will notice that both the lord of the 4th and Mercury, another planet showing mental development, are in the sensitive degrees given above and severely afflicted in Chart 3,_ Mercury is retrograde. Another planet showing the mind, namely, the Moon is also severely afflicted by Saturn. The lords of the 3rd, 4th and 5th are all afflicted. The Ascendant lord, though in exaltation, is hemmed between Mars on one side and Ketu on the other.

The aspect of Mars on the planets in the 12th house is apparently responsible for the violent spells she is getting. According to Western astrologers, influences conducive to idiocy are Mercury and the houses of Mercury, namely the 6th and 3rd houses, as well as signs Gemini and Virgo. When these are under severe affliction and when Mercury is unconnected with the Moon, severe mental retardation is possible. They also associate 28° of Capricorn on the Ascendant with idiocy. If this is the Sayana degree then chances are that 25° to 28° of Sayana and 5° to 8° of Nirayana could have something to do with idiocy when rising on the Ascendant. In Chart 3, incidentally Capricorn 7° is rising.

After having examined all these factors and making sure marriage will take place, one should then proceed to examine the success or otherwise of the marriage.

Spiritual Illumination and Jupiter Dasa(Part1)

Synergy Between Dharma Moksha Trikonas
The 1st, 5th and 9th houses are called Dharma Trikonas or the tripod of righteous inclinations. The 4th, 8th and 12th houses are described as Moksha Trikonas signifying spiritual propensities. Any relationship between the Dharma and Moksha Trikonas or their lords provide the needed impetus for spiritual growth and evolution of the native . An excellent example of such a combination is that of the Jagadgum Sankaracharya Sri Abhinava Teertha, the 35th pontiff in the spiritual lineage of the Sringeri Peetam founded by Bhagavatpada Adi Sankaracharya, in whose horoscope, the 4th lord Saturn is in the 9th, the, 8th lord Mercury is in the 1st and the 12th lord Venus in the 2nd gets connected to the 5th lord Jupiter by Parivartana creating the right planetary environment for the embodiment of a great soul racing towards the Ultimate Goal.

Sun - Moon Conjunction
It was exactly a hunders years ago on November 13, 1917 thet the embodiment of compassion and spiritual perfection Jagadguru Sri Abhinava Vidya Teertha Mahaswami was toolk birth under a uniques Planetary configuration  that could leave no one in doubt of the great role he was to play in the hallowed lineage of Bhagavadpada Sri Adi Sankaracharya. The Sun and the Moon are two important factors, apart from the Ascendant , in any chart but more especially so in those that belong to spiritually advanced souls. The Sun is the natural significator of the soul or Atmakaraka ruling the Supreme Self. The Moon ,on the other hand, which receives identity from reflecting the solar brilliance, is the Manahkaraka or natural significator of the mind or the ego which is the cause of all duality and which therefore takes the soul away from its true nature.

In most charts with spiritual potential, the Sun and Moon therefore occupy pivotal points or houses indicating thereby the potential for the Higher Self to overcome the lower self or individual ego of the native.

The Moon or mind controls one at every moment of one's life and in the process tends to lead one away from one's true Self, the Atma, symbolised by the Sun. The Moon leads one to a false identification with thoughts from which the mind derivers its strength. Sans thoughts there is no mind. Sans thought the True Self reveals Itself. The death or fading away of the mind leads to comprehension of one's true Self.

The Sun and Moon together or moving towards a conjunction, therefore, is one of the best combinations for spirituality under certain other planetary conditions. Such a birth, described as occurring on or about an Amavasya, in common parlance is often
treated with fear as showing a life devoid of success, happiness and health. Such charts are usually written off as of failures in life. Though true to a large extent, such a combination where supported by other planetary factors, can indeed release unusual levels of spirituality where it loses its puny individuality to become one with the Universal Cosmic soul.

Moksha as Dharma
The Moon in the Mahaswami's case is the 9th lord. The 9th house is the Dharmastana which rules one's sense of right and wrong. As the 9th lord, the Moon occupies the 12th or Mokshastana emphasizing the orientation of the chart with Dharma being directed towards Moksha. The Sun who is the Atmakaraka is also the 10th lord, ruler of one's main activity or Karma in life. Such a 10th lord is in the 12th in Mokshastana which makes Moksha the main objective of the native's Karma or activity.

The Acharya's main goal in life was Moksha but it was not to be in an isolated sense far from the madding crowd. Right in the midst of the world and its teeming troubled souls, the Acharya had to not only pursue the goal himself but also guide and lead his lesser brethren towards it. It is therefore natural for such a leader of spiritual matters to enjoy Raja Yogas for otherwise, how can one be the pontiff of the ancient-most seat of Advaita philosophy, the hoary Sringeri Sarada Peetam.
The Sun and Moon together act as the 9th and 10th lords to generate a Raja Yoga, Dharmakarmadhipati Yoga, welding temporal duties with spiritual tasks.

Strength of the Ascendant
According  to Varahamihira, the Ascendant lord, Jupiter or Mercury in the Ascendant make it extremely powerful. If planets other than these aspect or occupy the Ascendant, the results are not so(. Brihat Jataka 1-19)

Chart 1: H.H. Sri Abhinava Vidya Teertha : Born November 13, 1917 at 8h. 30m. (1ST) at 12 N 58, 77 E 35 with a balance of 13 years 11 months 11 days of Rahu Dasa at birth.
Chart 1

The Ascendant is the main pillar of a chart and its strength or otherwise can alter its entire scope. The Ascendant Scorpio in aspected by its lord Mars from the 10th, the most powerful Kendra. Mercury occupies the Ascendant itself while Jupiter aspects it from another Kendra. All the three conditions given by Varahamihira obtaining simultaneously make the Ascendant unusually powerful.

Deeply Spiritual Sign Rising
The sign rising on the Ascendant is Scorpio, the most spiritual as well as the most beastial sign, as described in astrological texts. Scorpio afflicted makes a beast of a man crude, vulgar, indolrat with brute appetites and an animal in buna form. Symbolised by the deadly scorpion which is known to sting itself to death, Ais sign often produces renegade souls who court misery and self destruction caogfat in unbridled passions and excessive levels of attachment and hate with scant regard for humaneness. In dignity, Scorpio is bma to produce the highest levels of spirituality where love of humanity and concern for the suffering supercede all considerations. As the 8th sign of the Kalapurusha (Zodiac) ruling life, a well-placed Scorpio bestows regenerative strength on its natives who can cut through the limitations of the body and mind to embrace all humanity as their own selves.

The Ascendant in this case is further strengthened by the fact, its ruler Mars occupies the 10th, the best Kendra, in the royal sign Leo. Mars here not only gets Vargottama strength but also Digbala. The Ascendant point rises in Pisces Navamsa, the sign symbolizing Liberation. As a result, the sign Scorpio becomes predominantly positive unleashing the tremendous potential it has in spiritualizingt the native.

Mercury in the Ascendant as the Karaka for vak or speech endowed the Acharya with a bright smiling face and a strong sense of humour and who was quick to repartee with wit shorn of sarcasm.

Jupiter is the Karaka for Sattwa Guna, the natural fallout of which is peace that surpassath all understanding springing as it does from an unending fount of bliss from within. Jupiter's aspect on the Ascendant endowed the Acharya even as a little boy with a rare tranquility and compassion.

Mars, the Ascendant lord, is in the 10th, with Digbala where he becomes exceedingly powerful in conferring the highest office one can enjoy in one's vocational life. Being Vargottama his blessings multiply manifold. Since the 10th house is intricately connected with the Ascendant through its lord, the pontificate came to him very early in his life even as he was stepping into his teens.

The 5th lord in the 7th is not conducive to marital life. In this case as a first rate benefic, the 2nd and 5th lord, Jupiter in the 7th aspected by Mercury resulted in a life of unsullied Brahmacharya, one of the pre-requisites for not only qualifying for office under this order but also for attaining the ultimate in spiritual life.

Venus, the 7th lord, is in the 2nd in Sagittarius in exchange of signs with the 2nd lord Jupiter. This combination by itself could have led to a happy family life but Rahu with Venus would not let it be.

Venus and Rahu occupy Moola Nakshatra ruled by Ketu who, in turn, in the 8th, a Mokshatrikona is extremely comfortably placed to attract the native to the pursuit of spiritual truths. Moola is particularly associated with Saraswati, the goddess of learning, but being subtly influenced by the Jupiterean significations as a result of the exchange of signs between Venus and Jupiter transmutes learning into Gnana or spiritual wisdom.

How weak Moon affects the emotions?

Weak Moon in Astrology
Moon is the indicator of mind, emotions, mother, home, homeland and females in general. If you want to know the situation of your mind and thought process, then you should see the placement of Moon. It waxes and wanes, and out mind also is very flexible and moving. Moon is the owner of the watery sign of Cancer and Moon is also a watery planet. It rules the 4th house in the natural zodiac wheel. This 4th house indicates family, mother and all the matters indicated by the Moon.

Moon is debilitated in another water sign Scorpio. When Moon is in this sign, then that means it is dealing with tough subjects which the Moon generally do not like to be in. Moon likes to be in a secure and peaceful domain like mother, family comfort and home. In Scorpio, it is placed over the tough matters like sex, crisis, investments, finances, taxes, insurances, partnerships and loans. Here Moon will be disturbed, and it may lose all its happiness.

When your Moon is weak, then you will naturally have struggles in being happy. You may have to go an extra mile being satisfied with all the matters of your life. Relationship with elderly female figures can be complex. Especially with your mother, you can have a very sensitive relationship, unlike other signs. Mother can be constructive, but she may leave a negative impact on you. You will have to go an extra mile in keeping your mind happy and stable.

Unlike other planets, the Sun and the Moon never move in a retrogression mode. Moon is not in enmity with any planet, but Mercury, Venus, and Saturn see Moon as their enemy. So, when Moon is in conjunction with this planet, then,  Moon can be in a complex mode.  Moon doesn’t like to be with shadow planets Rahu and Ketu as well.

Rahu and Ketu are highly obsessive energies. So, when they are with such a sensitive planet-like moon they will trigger it in an intense way. This conjunction may indicate a peaceless mind.

Rahu is an obsession and Ketu is detachment. So, When the Moon conjunct the Rahu, your mind will be always aggressive. You can use this energy in a constructive or destructive way and that is solely depending on your free will.

Moon may feel difficulty in being their signs as well. Everyone will go through emotional struggles despite the placement of the Moon. Such issues are not restricted to those whose Moon is in a complex mode.

When the Moon is in a conjunction with the Jupiter, it creates a GajaKesari Yoga, but it also has another side. This placement can give a mother who is so over-protective and insecure about her child. Such mothers also can create emotional struggles for children.

So, when the Moon is in a complex mode, then you should understand that you are a highly sensitive and please don’t engage in any activity which can add more emotional burdens. A healthy diet is also important to have a good mind and mental strength.

More on the Evil of Dustanas - Part 1

There is no point in minimizing of glossing ever the evil of the 6th, the 8th, and the 12th houses and their lords. Of these, the 8th is the worst. The 6th is next in order of malefic effects and the 12th comes next. The 12th denotes enjoyment and expenditure. If enjoyment is in excess, a person falls ill, losing health (the 6th) and may run into debt(the 6th) if expenses outrun income. While the 6th denotes disease and debts, the 8th connotes death and disgrace. Death, as stated by Poet Tennyson "closes all". Death silences the orator and parliamentarian and the lawyer of forensic eloquence: it stills the music of the veena, the violin and the human voice; it disables and puts an end to the skill of the eminent surgeon. Death, therefore, is dreaded more than even disease, just as disgrace and dismissal are dreaded even more than debts. That is why, the 8th house is deemed the worst of all houses; and the 8th lord is regarded as the most baneful of the hidden houses the 3rd, the 6th, 8th and the 12th. Natural malefics are considered to be good in the 3rd, the 6th and the 11th. But, even they are not commended in the 8th and the 12th unless they own a bad house like the 6th or a Badhakastana. Even when Saturn, say, as a Badhaka for Aries may relegated to the 12th, he is weakened as the lord of the 10th, so that if and when Saturn is in the 6th or the 8th or the 12th, a native faces initial disappointments and frustration in the matter of employment and earnings, despite high education.

The late Sri V. Krishnaswamy Iyer, who rose to be an eloquent and great lawyer, a High Court Judge, and the Governor's Law Member in the then Executive Council and who founded the Millipore Sanskrit College and Sri Venkataramana Ayurvedic College, was the founder of the Indian Bank also. When and then Arbuthnot Bank failed and crashed ruining many Indian families he had his inital setbacks, thanks to Mars, lord of Aries Ascendant being in the 4th in Neecha(Neechabhanga though) and Saturn, lord of the 10th and 11th, in the 6th. but thanks to excellent and well placed Jupiter, and the dicta that a malefic by nature is good in the 6th and a Badhaka may be in the 6th, the 8th or the 12th, he rose to fortune and fame.

When Saturn is in the 12th for Aries, a native does meet initial failure and disappointment and frustration, even when a powerful aspect by bene fie Jupiter from Cancer redeems him. But, redemption is not the same, and falls far short of reinforcement, so that Jupiter and Saturn in the 9th in Sagittarius cause a much superior Dhannakarmadhipati Raja Yoga, the Badhaka (tormentor) in the 9th becoming a Sadhaka (supporter), so that the 10th lord is powerful in the 9th, with the 9th lord Jupiter in his own house.

Incidentally, the best position for Jupiter, lord of the 9th (and the 12th) for Aries Ascendant is Sagittarius and the 9th. It is superior, even to Jupiter in the 4th in exaltation, even though a natural benefic in a Kendra as lord of a trine or Trikona is excellent. The reasons are two-fold. Kumaraswamiyam, an ancient Tamil work, postulates that a planet should be in a good place, avoiding the 3rd, the 6th, the 8th and the 12th, not only from the Ascendant but also from his own place and from the Moon. When Jupiter is in the 4th from the Ascendant, even in exaltation, he is in the 8th from the 9th and so, the rule in Tamil Avaravartham Manikkum, Kalanganukkam Maraiamal is not complied with. Secondly Jupiter in the 9th in own houses conduces to more male issues, provided he does not attain an even or female Navamsa. But, Jupiter in Cancer, an even sign and the house of the Moon, shows more female issues.

Similarly the lord of the 7th in the 6th, or the 8th or the 12th causes late marriage, spouse from a lower social status or even no marriage. When the lord of the 7th is ill-placed in a Trika or Dustana and the 7th is occupied by a malefic and is flanked on either side by a malefic, one malefic being in the 6th and another in the 8th, however good and good-looking a girl may be, thanks to the Ascendant and the Moon if her lord of the 7th is in the 6th, or the 8th or the 12th, either she is married to a husband having a status far below that of her parental family or there are several disappointments before marriage fructifies.

I have known Libra Ascendant natives with lord of the 7th Mars in the 6th and without benefic aspect remaining unmarried till the age of 30 or 32 years, especially when Venus, lord of the Ascendant, and Mars, lord of the 7th, are in Shashtashtaka, even though Venus, lord of the Ascendant, and love is in the 11th. I have also found Scorpio Ascendant natives with Venus in the 8th as lord of the 7th being married rather late, after experiencing a lot of disappointment in the marriage-market, even though lord of the 12th in the 8th may be praised by the texts. For Scorpio Ascendant, Venus, lord of the 7th and the 12th, is classed as a malefic as the 7th is a Marakastana and the 12th is a Dustana or Trika house. So, he should not join and mar Yogakarakas Sun and the Moon or Jupiter, the unsullied lord of the 2nd and the 5th. But, Venus exalted in the 5th has been found to give a good looking and loving spouse, and ample or abundant Bhoga Bhagya or enjoyment provided Venus is not tainted by Sanim or Rahu or Ketu, or even by Mars, who, though lord of the Ascendant, is also the lord of the 6th (Moolatrikona - Aries). For, there is a Sloka in Phaladeepika, which says that if the lord of the 12th is strong, in a Kendra or Trikona, and exalted or in Swakshetra (own sign) especially if he is a natural benefic, the native spends liberally on good people (and good carases), performs auspicious Karma or acts, to wipe out sins and is also honoured by the king.

Similarly a Tamil classic on astrology says that if the lord of the 12th is a benefic by nature and is strong in a Kendra and in exaltation, the native enjoys life with a lady playing on the veena or other musical instrument, with a fine bed strewn with flowers and pleasures of the couch. That is why Kerala scholars always used to say that the 12th is not so bad as the 6th or the 8th, since the 12th has a lower octave of enjoyment of life (though involving expenditure) and a higher octave of Moksha or final emancipation of deliverance or release from the recurring cycle of births and deaths. But, the lord of the 12th can be so regarded as fairly good 'and not wholly bad, only for Aries Ascendant, for which Jupiter is the lord of the 9th and the 12th, the 9th (Sagittarius) being Moolatrikona for Gemini for which Venus is the lord of the 5th and the 12th. the 5th (Libra) being Moolatrikona. Mars, lord of the 12th, is passable for Taurus if in exaltation and for Scorpio, if Venus is in the 5th in exaltation. But, a strong lord 'of the 12th makes one Lead his life like a lord, and live a rich life so that his savings will be meager or poor, and he cannot and will not die rich! However, only the lord of the 9th and the 12th or the lord of the 5th and the 12th can be classed as rated as a benefic, par excellence, next to a planet owning a trine and quadrant, i.e., a Trikona and Kendra, at the same time. But the lord of the 7th and the 12th is not such a benefic. though, when dignified in exaltation in the 5th or the 9th, for Scorpio or Taurus respectively, he is not so evil or cruel.

For Taurus Ascendant, if Saturn is in the 12th in Aries . the horoscope is no good when the key planet is in the 12th and in debility. Even if there is Neechabhanga, without benefic aspect Saturn very substantially reduces the pattern of the horoscope, so that it may be futile to wax eloquent about other planets, except, perhaps, the Sun and Mercury together in a good house as the lords of the 4th and the 5th respectively. Similarly, Mars, lord of the 4th and die 9th. in the 12 th and in debility in Cancer, iedoces radically the pattern of a Leo Ascendant chart. Other planets may not help much, though the Sun and Mercury together, in a good house, :: Ascendant and of the 2nd and the 11th will give some decent prosperity. The native with Mars in the 12th in Cancer for Leo Ascendant may sell away his lands and even his hone, and may not be dutiful to his mother and fail fatiKT. He will indulge in pompous and wasteM expenditure and fritter away his ii ibwi n Saturn in the 12th in debility will be equally had fling wasteful expenditure and frirlint andqaands in the family. For, a person with Saturn in the 8th or the 12th will have little domestic peace and much wasteful expenditure and members of his family circle will be inimical towards him.

Impact of weak Sun in different houses

Weak Sun in Astrology
According to the Vedas, the Sun is the provider of life . The Sun is a revolutionary kind of force as in astrology, whichever house, the Sun is placed, it can make you realistic. You may not supposed to be having a superficial kind of approach in those matters.

The Sun is the king of astrology and all the planets revolve around it. So, the Sun is the main planet and it indicates soul, ego, father, self-esteem, authority, health, vitality, courage and confidence.

The Sun is exalted in Aries and debilitated in Libra. This exaltation and debilitation is a very controversial phenomenon. Both the placements have positive and negative indications.

In a natural zodiac wheel, Aries is the 1st sign and Libra is the 7th. Libra lies on the lower side of the zodiac wheel. The Sun being a king enjoys the attention and he gets in the 1st sign, but it doesn’t like to be in the sign where it has to remain in the background. It doesn’t like to be in this sign despite the house because this house deals with day to day relationships.

Being the King, the Sun likes to be in the throne, but when he sends out to deal with all the complexities in the relationships, then a person with Sun in debilitation can have issues with so many people. Primarily with father, this person can have issues.

The Sun indicates the father in astrology and the Sun in Libra person will have to go an extra mile in being happy with their father. The father-child relationship will advance amidst a lot of struggles. They may have to go an extra mile in controlling their ego and this ego can bring issues in all the relationships.

Power struggles will be another feature of the planet Sun. When the Sun is in Libra or when it is in the 7th house, can also make your Sun weak. The Sun doesn’t share a good relationship with Saturn, and Venus. So, when placed in the sign owned by these 2 planets, then the Sun can be weak or inefficient.

The Sun is a powerful planet, so even if it is in a good mode, it may make you power hungry in the matters of the house which it is placed, despite exalted or debilitated.

If this debilitated or weak Sun is in the 1st house, then it indicates a recurrent focus on health. In the 2nd house ongoing power struggle in the family. In the 3rd house, then the power struggles can be with siblings. The 4th house is showing the stress with family. When Sun is placed in the 5th, then the power struggles can be with children or partner in romance. In the 6th house, it makes you power hungry over your colleagues. The 7th house Sun is, of course, showing the hiccups in the marital life. In the 8th house, it can be with your partners. Then, the 9th house sun shows the friction with gurus, mentors or father. The 10th house sun shows issues with administration. The 11th house Sun shows frictions in your group settings. The 12th house Sun reflects issues in emotional stability.

Effects of Ketu Mahadasha

Ketu Mahadasa
Ketu is the primary indicator of spirituality in astrology. The kind of spirituality, which Ketu indicates is the intense form of spirituality, not like a kind of ritualistic. Ketu is known as the tail of demon in astrology and Ketu Mahadasa will last for 7 years.

This spirituality will be very transformative. Transformations are actually very powerful and stressful. You may have emotional issues. Basically, during any mahadasa, the house which the planet placed will be in the main focus. This main focus will continue throughout the dasha. In Ketu dasha also, this rule applies, but there will be a huge focus on spirituality as well.

Ketu is actually a headless planet. So, there are great chances for you to make wrong decisions and thus landing in different troubles. If you are a person who is going through Mercury dasa, you should understand that, Ketu dasa is waiting for you. Once when you reach the end phase of Mercury dasa, you should understand that the coming days, you are going to transform.

There is a general assumption that in certain houses Ketu will give you best dasha. These are just misguiding information. If it is Ketu dasa then you will have to move towards your spiritual ashram.

Married people will have to be cautious when one of the couples moves through Ketu dasa. Since Ketu indicates spirituality, it may not greatly favor an easy marital relationship. Please try to be compassionate with each other. Once when Ketu dasa gets over, your Venus dasa will come. That will be a good time period, if Venus is placed well.

During Ketu dasa, you must start a spiritual activity. Learning spiritual texts under a Guru will be surely soothing to you during Ketu dasa. The world has become very materialistic and people generally feel that they have walk with a crowd who madly follows the practices of heightened spirituality. We may forget the path of the spirituality is ultimate force. This Ketu dasa is a great opportunity to reconnect with the ultimate force which is the cause and reason for everything in the universe.

Here is the beauty of Ketu dasa. This dasa is a great dasa to fulfill your righteous desires and wishes. If you are moving in a spiritual path, then you will see great blessings coming to you.  Progress is sure when you may spirituality your mark.

Despite your religious belief, you all are requested to follow spirituality. It should not be a ritualistic spirituality. You should have the godliness in your mind and body. This is the opportunity to amass that much of blessings for your future.

If you are a person going through struggles during Ketu dasa, then go for a retrospect. What were your actions in the past and how you performed in the past? You will somewhere see unrighteous deeds from you. Then you should take an effort to correct those. Then you will see a lot of blessings in your life.

Here is the horoscope of a female(Rasi:- Cancer - Ascendant and the Moon; Leo- Saturn; Sagittarius -Mars; Pisces- Venus(comb); Aries- Sun and Mercury; and Gemini- Jupiter) who lived long, was extremely pious and devoted to Lord Rama but whose life was one of unmitigated misery and grief. The lord of the Ascendant in the Ascendant with Jupiter, lord of the 6th, in the 12th made her constitution sound and her health, good and her life, long. The lord of the 7th in the 2nd with the 2nd lord exalted in the 10th got her married to a husband with 48 and odd acres of wet land. But, her Venus Dasa (Venus is in combustion) gave her five abortions and 14 or 15 children, out of whom 8 died. Only one survived her and performed the Sraddha Karmas (obsequicies) for both his father and then, his widowed mother. The lord of the 9th in the 12th and lord of the 5th and the 10th in the 6th (aspected by Jupiter) made the 9th and the 10th Yoga nominal and poor as both the 9th and the 10th lords are in Dustanas —the 12th and the 6th. And the 12th lord in the 10th with the lord of the 2nd gave heavy expenses so that the lands were reduced to 12 acres. That is why Jataka Chandrika says that if the lords of Kendras and Konas associate without the association of other (evil) lords, then only there is Raja yoga.

There is another rule, that the lords of the 9th and the 10th cannot and do not give Raja Yoga, if either of those lords owns the 8th or the 11th or if they are associated with, that is, combined with or aspected by the lords of the 8th and the 11th. All readers can easily and readily appreciate that the lord of the 8th will certainly mar the Yoga and spoil the broth, if he conjoins or aspects the 9th and the 10th lords.

Why should the lord of the 11th, however, spoil prosperity when the 11th represents income from profession and prosperity? The reason-the lord of the 11th has stress on earnings and acquisitions and if he is given free play with the lord of the 9th and the 10th, a native may abuse his position and power to enrich himself by feathering his own nest. That may tarnish the native's reputation and land him in trouble which may lead to downfall. For instance, for Scorpio Ascendant, the Sun and the Moon, lords of the 10th and 9th, will be marred by Mercury, lord of the 8th and the 11th, joining them. I shall illustrate this with the horoscope[ Rasi:- Scorpio - Ascedant; Sagittarius - Mars: Capricorn - Saturn; Aquarius - Ketu; Taurus - Jupiter; Leo ' -Venus and Rahu; and Virgo - the Sun, the Moon and Mercury.] of an employee of the Revenue Department. He rose steadily to the post of a Deputy Collector when he got into trouble and was dismissed on alleged grounds of corruption. His suit in the Sub Court questioning his dismissal from service, as wrongful and illegal or unlawful, was also dismissed. He is now dependent on one of his sons. Kapila Nadi praised his chart, as that of a Niyuthathipan or lakhier and never predicted his downfall, as it seemed to view that the Sun, the Moon and Mercury in the 11th were good and beneficial as the lords of the 9th, the 10th and the 11th in the 11th, and seemed to ignore the lord of the 6th in the 12th, the lord of the 12th in the 10th and Mercury's lordship of the 8th as well.

Thus, generally speaking, subject to clear exceptions, any planet in the 6th or the 8th or the 12th, particularly the 8th, is bad and the lords of the 6th, the 8th and the 12th are like poison even a drop of which will spoil a jug of milk. It is always better and safer for the lord of the Ascendant and of the 9th and the 10th to be isolated from the lords of the 6th or the 8th or the 12th. The exceptions are furnished by the lord of the 8th being in th 6th or the 12th, or the lord of 8th being in the 6th or the 8th.
स्थान एव नियोज्यन्ते भृत्यश्चभरणानि ||
meaning, that it is the place or position that makes a servant or jewels shine.
Even so that house is weak whose lord is ill-placed in the 6th or the 8th or the 12th. If the lord of the 10th is in the 6th or the 8th or the 12th, even a highly educated and talented person may be unemployed or may suffer for want of sufficient employment, unless the planet "fallen" in the 6th or the 8th or the 12th is redeemed and retrieved by the powerful aspect of a powerful benefic.
For, the Sloka runs:-
दुष्टस्थितोवापी  यदान भोगः
पापारिनीचांशक संयुतोयः |
स्वतुंगमित्रंशकराशियुक्तः शुभीक्ष व यदि
शोभनस्यात  ||
meaning, that even when badly placed, in bad Amsas or in a Dustana (the 6th or the 8th or in the 12th), if a planet is in his own house or in his exaltation or at least in a friendly house, and is also well aspected by a (powerful) benefic, he becomes auspicious.

Thus, if Saturn, say, for Aries Ascendant is in the 12th in Pisces and well aspected by powerful Jupiter from Cancer, after initial disappointments and even bitter struggles, the native prospers in his profession. But, prosperity in respect of the 10th house will never equal, say, the flourishing 10th house, denoted by Saturn in the 9th in Sagittarius, with Jupiter also there or aspected by Jupiter from his position in the 5th house in Leo. For, when the lord of die 10th and the 11th is in the 9th, for Aries, Karma-Badhaka become Sadhaka; and, when blessed by Jupiter's aspect from Leo or by conjunction with Jupiter in Sagittarius, he elevates the native to the highest pedestal. For instance, an F.C.S. officer rose to be the topmost Military Accountant-General, superseding his senior; and, he had Jupiter and Saturn in the 9th in Sagittarius. True, Saturn in Pisces in the 12th, as Karma-Badhaka is not at all so bad as Saturn, lord of the 9th and the 10th for Taurus, in the 12th in Aries in debility; and, when aspected by powerful Jupiter is even auspicious eventually. But, he cannot and does not give the highest flights in career for two reasons. Firstly, redemption of the lord of the 10th, ill-placed in the 12th, is not the same as reinforcement of a well-placed lord of the 10th in the 9th. Secondly, Jupiter in the 9th in Sagittarius, as lord of the 9th, avoids the evil of his ownership of the 12th; and Jupiter, lord of the 9th and the 12th in Leo, is in the 6th from the 12th and in the 9th from the 9th, aspecting the 9th, his own house of fortune (the 9th).
                                                                                                                                      to be continued...

If the lord of the 7th is in the 6th or the 8th or the 12th, the native's marital prospects suffer, even when the native is educated and fairly well employed. For example, I have a horoscope [ Born August 8, 1940 Rasi:- Scorpio - Ascendant; Pisces-Ketu; Aries - Jupiter and Saturn; Gemini-Venus; Cancer-Sun, Mars and Mercury ; and Virgo-Moon and Rahu, Navamsa; Capricorn-Ascendant, Sun, Venus and Rahu; Cancer-Ketu; Leo-Moon and Mercury; and Libra-Jupiter and Saturn.] of a qualified and employed young woman who is unmarried at 32.

The lords of the Ascendant, the 10th and 11th (and the 8th) are together in the 9th and the Moon, lord of the 9th, is in the 11th, though with Rahu who is good in the 11th though he might eclipse the Moon indicating father as he is the 9th lord. So, she is educated and employed. But her earnings were frittered away by her father. Mark Mars, also lord of the 6th in the 9th in debility, without clear Neechabhanga (cancellation of debilitation); and she is unmarried, though about 32 and hence unhappy. Why? See the lord of the 7th in the 8th from the -Ascendant and Jupiter (Bhratrukaraka) in the 6th. Venus is also in the 12th from the Ascendant lord. It is idle to buttress ill-placed Jupiter (lord of husband for females and lord of the 2nd, family) in the 6th and Venus, lord of the 7th in the 8th, by saying, as some professional astrologers do. that being so in Lagnadhi Yoga, when all the three benefics are not in the 6th, the 7th and the 8th from Ascendant (for, here Mercury is  the 9th) and when the lord of the 8th and the 11th may be relegated, say, to the 8th or the 12 but Jupiter, the excellent lord of the 2nd and the 5th,  and even Venus, lord of the 7th, though as lord of the 12th he may be in a hidden house.Further,  Saturn lord of the 4th (Sukhastana) is Neecha in the 6th, there being no Neechabhanga worth the name. Therefore, the native may chant the following prayer to Sri Ambal(Mother Goddess), before a deepa (lamp) and do namaskaras (prostrations) every Monday, Friday and Saturday.

Then she may be married in the end of Venus Bhukti, though the bridegroom may be below her standards, and through Ketu in the 5th , the 5th and the second lord jupiter in the 6th, and Mars in the Neecha, with Mercury lord of the 8th and the 11th and the moon lord of the 9th with rahu(though in the 11th) indicate doubtful prospects of progeny.

Another horoscope is of a good lady born in Sagittarius Ascendant with Jupiter in the 11th but the Sun, Mercury and Venus in the 12th, whose lord Mars is exalted in the 2nd from the Ascendant and the 10th from the Moon in Aries. The lord of the 7th in the 12th (in the 6th from the 7th and the 8th from the Moon) with the lord of the 9th (also lord of the 6th) made her husband lose a railway job and find it difficult to maintain his family and get his daughters married.

The only antidote to a good lord being in the 6th or the 8th or the 12th is a powerful benefic aspect on the ill-placed planet. Even then, the evil of occupation of a Dustana is experienced before the good powerful redeeming aspect operates and improves the Bhava. But, without such a benefic aspect, there is no use of the badly placed planet. For Scorpio Ascendant, however, Venus, lord of the 7th and the 12th, is found to be good in the 5th in Pisces or in the 12th in own house Libra; it is safer and superior to Venus in the 7th as lord of the 7th even. But even Venus with Mercury in Gemini in the 8th is found to delay marriage and cause slight difficulties in marital life, in spite of Mercury with Venus, as a benefic occupying his own house, giving support to the other occupant-guest, his friend Venus. And, Jupiter in the 6th and Mercury and Venus in the 8th may cause feeble Lagnadhi Yoga.

Of course, the evil of the 7th lord's weakness can be compensated for by a powerful 9th house or 9th lord in a female nativity; for, the 9th is Sowbhagyastana for women, and the expression Sowbhagya means and implies good fortune, generally, with special stress and emphasis on mutual cordiality, devotion and fidelity of the couple. For the Scorpio Ascendant native, I hope against hope that if she recites Sri Katyayani Mantra with devotion, she may get married, without being a spinster throughout only because the lord of the 9th Moon is in the 11th and Venus is in the 10th from the Moon (as the lord of the 2nd and the 9th from the Moon) and there is a good exchange of houses between the Moon and Mercury.

Hanuman Jayanti

Hanuman Jayanti
Hanuman Jayanti is a Hindu religious festival that commemorates the birth of Lord Hanuman. As per the Hindu belief, Hanuman is the most powerful being in all the realms and is worshipped as the symbol of strength and energy. He is one of the major characters in Ramayana and, according to the epic, he is a Vanara (a monkey-like humanoid form) who became a dedicated disciple of Lord Ram. In Ramayana, there are so many contexts explaining Hanuman’s power and valor. Without Hanuman, Lord Ram would not have succeeded in his combat against Ravan and rescuing Sita from his captivity. So, people worship Hanuman as a symbol of devotion, strength and energy and as one having the magical powers to ward off the negativities. In another interpretation, he is regarded as an incarnation of Lord Siva himself.

When is Hanuman Jayanti celebrated?
In most parts of India, Hanuman Jayanthi is celebrated in the Poornima (full moon) day of the Chaitra month which usually befalls in March or April in the Gregorian calendar. According to some religious almanacs, the birthday of Hanuman falls on the fourteenth day (chaturdashi) in the dark fortnight of the month of Ashvin.

Towards South, Hanuman Jayanti is celebrated on different dates in different states. In Tamil Nadu and Kerala, it is believed that Hanuman was born on the Margazhi Amavasya (new moon day) and the day is observed in the lunisolar month Margazhi (Dhanu), befalling on December or January in the Gregorian calendar. In Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, it is observed on 10th day of Vaishaka month in the Krishna Paksha and is a 41-day celebration starting from the Chaitra Purnima. In Karnataka, it is observed on the Shukla Paksha Trayodashi of Margashirsha (Margazhi) month and, in Odisha, it is celebrated on the 1st day of the month of Baisakha (in April).

Hanuman Jayanti 2018
In 2018, the Poornima or full moon day of Chaitra month befalls on 31st of March. So, in most parts of India, the festival will be observed on this date.

Purnima Tithi Beginning: 19:35 on 30/Mar/2018
Purnima Tithi Ending: 18:06 on 31/Mar/2018

The legend behind Hanuman’s birth
As per the legend, Lord Hanuman was born on the Anjaneri mountain. His father Kesari was the son of Brihaspati and was the King of Sumeru. His mother Anjana was an apsara who got cursed to live on earth. She gave birth to Hanuman after an intense prayer to Siva which lasted 12 long years and, by giving birth, she was redeemed from her curse.

Hanuman is regarded as an incarnation or reflection of Siva and is often called Vayuputra which means the son of Vayu (God of Wind). There are many interpretations of Ramayana which give an account of the Vayu’s role in Hanuman’s birth. One such legend is that Vayu transferred Lord Siva’s male energy to Anjana's womb when she and her husband Kesari prayed the Lord for a child. Another legend is that when Siva and Parvati transformed themselves to Vanaras and Parvati got conceived, Siva directed Vayu to carry the offspring from Parvati's womb to that of Anjana. There is also an interpretation that by divine ordinance, Vayu snatched a fragment of the sacred pudding (payasam) which King Dasaratha had received from Putrakama yagna and delivered it to Anjana’s hands who was also worshipping with the purpose of conceiving a child. In another version of the story, Hanuman is simply the offspring of Anjana and Vayu.

Hanuman Jayanti Observations
Lord Hanuman is worshipped as a deity with the ability to attain victory against evil and provide protection. On the day of Hanuman Jayanthi, devotees rush to Hanuman temples for prayers and offerings in the early morning. As Hanuman was born at the time of sunrise, various rituals are performed before the dawn itself. Applying red tilak on Hanuman idols, offering pujas, doing the aarti and chanting mantras, songs and hymns are some common practices performed on this day. Devotees recite hymns like Hanuman Chalisa or lines from the Ramayana. Prasad will be distributed among the devotees which include sweets, flowers, coconuts, vermilion, sacred ash (udi), holy water etc.

Significance
Hanuman is considered as the 11th Rudra avatar of Lord Siva and is worshipped as a symbol of strength, knowledge, valor, intelligence and selfless service. He is believed to be an immortal being observing life-long celibacy and who possess the power to prevent all kinds of negative influences or temptations. He who has devoted his life to Lord Ram and Sita never showed his strength or valor without any purpose. One shall worship Hanuman to achieve these kinds of virtues.

According to the mythology, Hanuman belongs to the Vanara community which, in reality, would have been a tribal group of people who lived in the forests. They might have been powerful and energetic beings, possessing some animal instincts. Hanuman worship is symbolic of the level of being all of us have.
