Sun in the Seventh House

Cruel Planet

PARASARA speaks of the Sun as 'the soul of the Universe' - सर्वत्मा च दिवानाथो.... (Brihat Parasara Hora Chapter III, Sloka 12). Varahamihira describes the Sun as the 'soul of time' or  कालात्मा दिनकर.... (Brihat Jataka Chapter II, Sloka 1).
The Sun is a hot, dry and male planet. Other planets coming close to the Sun get combust and become ineffective. He is regarded as a krura graha (cruel planet) and prominently affects the house of his location in the horoscope. The classical texts have not spoken favorably about the Sun in the 7th house which rules marriage.

Classical Dicta

The astrological texts are unanimous in holding that the Sun in the 7th is unfavorable for smooth married life, irrespective of whether it is a female or male chart. However, the condition of females is more vulnerable because of desertion by husband and resultant problems.

Solar Moods

These astrological conclusions become clear upofi delving a little into the nature of the Sun. The early morning Sun is quite nourishing and invigorating. He enlivens the entire world. The Sun in the Ascendant (at sunrise) confers good health, wisdom, ambition, positive thinking and cheerfulness. He reaches the zenith at noon (in the 10th house), while the setting Sun (in the 7th house) becomes dull and lifeless. An individual with the Sun in the 7th house lacks energy, drive and position. He becomes self- centred, conceited, selfish and an introvert which creates problems with the spouse and associates. If the Sun is aspected by malefics in the 7th house, the native may not be interested in the opposite sex. A female with such a Sun becomes conceited, selfish, suspicious of the husband, quarrelsome over trifling matters and thereby ruins her married life.

The classical texts hold that the Sun in the 7th is unfavorable for smooth married life, irrespective of whether it is a female or male chart. An individual with the Sun in the 7th house lacks energy, drive and position. He becomes self-centered, conceited, selfish and an introvert which creates problems with the spouse and associates.

The Sun in the 7th house, like other malefics, spoils marital happiness in accordance with his nature. The Sun alone in the 7th house may cause marital problems due to selfishness,

The Sun in the 7th…..when conjoined with, flanked or aspected by malefic can lead to separation or divorce. However, the final outcome will depend on the sign in the 7th house and the influence of other planets on the Sun.

Suspicious nature or ego clashes, but when he is conjoined with, flanked or aspected by malefics, the situation becomes grave leading to separation or divorce. However, the final outcome will depend on the sign in the 7th house and the influence of other planets on the Sun.

Rationale of the Vimshottari Dasa Life Span

Introduction

The maximum period of human life is 120 years according to classical texts. On what basis is this assumption made?

There is an eternal truth that has to be highlighted and which is nothing but the fact that Nature is the true embodiment of equality. For example, when the river flows, anybody who approaches it is free to enjoy the water in it.
Let us examine against this background of Nature's great vision of equality as to the period of time required by all the seven planets to get equal duration of time to manifest their influence on human life.

The Sanskrit word Ucha stands for exaltation or maximum power and Neecha stands for debilitation or minimum power. The Sun spends a total of 120 months in Aries in its sign of exaltation in the course of 120 years. That is for 10 years. Similarly, the Sun may have remained in Libra, its sign of debilitation, for 10 years during the course of 120 years. The Sun would be spending in each Rasi or Zodiacal sign a period of 10 years during the course of 120 years. So it is a decade that the Sun spends in each Zodiac sign during the period of 120 years.

The Moon spends almost two and half days in a Zodiacal sign during a period of one month. So in one year the Moon spends one month in its exaltation sign Taurus (2nd house). At this rate, the Moon will spend 120 months during 120 years in Taurus. So it is again a period of 10 years that the Moon spends in its sign of debilitation Scorpio (8th house) Therefore, the Moon spends 10 years or a decade in each of the 12 signs during 120 years.
The sign Capricorn (10th house) is Mars' exaltation place while Cancer (4th house) is its sign of debilitation. Mars spends one and a half months time in each sign during its revolution round the Zodiac. It takes almost 18 months to make one revolution. In this way, Mars makes 80 revolutions during 120 years. At this rate, Mars spends a total of 120 months in each sign. Thus it takes 10 years per sign and a total of 120 years for Mars to exhibit his prowess that equals with the Sun and the Moon.

Mercury's exaltation sign is Virgo (6th house) and debilitation sign is Pisces (12th house). He spends 7 days per Zodiacal sign and completes one revolution in 88 days and 4 full revolutions in year. So after 120 years, he may complete more than 480 revolutions in 3360 days.

... Saturn represents the real portfolio of one's life period and perseverance. Saturn takes 30 years to complete an orbital revolution. So he spends two and half years in each sign, including its signs of exaltation and debilitation in this period of 30 years. So Saturn spends a decade in each sign and completes 4 revolutions during 120 years. Thus Saturn also maintains a decade of equality during the period of 120 years.

We may not have accounted for 30-40 full revolutions during these 120 years and if we count them also, Mercury would have spent 3650 days per sign, including its exaltation and debilitation signs. So Mercury also spends a decade in each sign during 120 years on par with the other planets.
Jupiter takes 12 years to complete one revolution of the Zodiac and spends 10 years in each Zodiacal sign in the course of 120 years. Jupiter spends a decade each in its exaltation sign Cancer and in Capricorn its debilitation sign. Thus Jupiter supports the equality of bestowing its power through a decade on each sign on par with other planets.

Venus takes 240 days for making one full revolution in its orbit. So in 10 years' time, Venus makes 15 revolutions. So he spends more than 3600 days in a sign, including Pisces, its exaltation sign, and Virgo, its debilitation sign Thus Venus takes a decade to demonstrate its skills over the living and non-living mortals on earth on par with the other planets.
Let us consider the case of Saturn who represents the real portfolio of one's life period and perseverance.

It is clear therefore that the seven planets have an equal influencing period of one decade of stay in each Zodiac sign and assert all their influences during the course of 120 years. This period of 120 years is what is considered as the limit to human life in Indian astrology. It is also a fact that this period of 120 years depends on the orbital period of all the planets and is a time frame during which all planets get an equal share of one decade in all the 12 signs during which they are able to demonstrate their prowess. It is important to note the duration of the period as one decade. A decade is the term equivalent to the Sanskrit word Dasa meaning a unit of number ten.

There is a high probability of a surprising event of synchronization which has to be considered. The planets make whole or integral number of revolutions with respect to their current positions in 120 years and return more or less to these same positions . . . such a synchronizing element also may have led to fixing 120 years as the optimum span of human life.

It is also important that this same unit of ten years is what is attributed to the period of Moon according to the Nakshatra Dasa scheme based on the 27 Nakshatras defining the Zodiac. The individual period of each planet is referred to as a Dasa or life stage of the planet. So considering the importance of this period of ten years as an exhaustive way of experiencing all possible outcomes of the planets, the limit of life period could have been fixed at 120 years. There is a high probability of another surprising event of synchronization which has to be considered. The planets make whole or integral number of revolutions with respect to their current positions in 120 years and return more or less to these same positions. May be such a synchronizing element also may have led to fixing 120 years as the optimum span of human life!

Pradosham - Dedicated to Lord Shiva

Pradosham

Pradosham/Pradosha is a specific time period of astrological importance occurring every day. This time period is believed to have the energy to remove our negative karma, and based on this energy level there are 3 levels of Pradosha. The name Pradosha coined from ‘Pra’ which means remover and ‘Dosha’ which means bad karma, possesses the inner meaning ‘remover of sins’.

According to Vedic Astrology every hour of a day is ruled by specific planets, causing specific vibrations in nature and human body. These vibrations can influence our mind and emotions which results in happiness or suffering. The gain, loss, joy, pain and mood changes which we experience is based on the level of frequency with which we connect to the planetary energies. By observing Pradosham rituals one can connect to the frequency of energy abundantly available for him.

Between various Pradosham periods, Shani Pradosham (Pradosham that occurs on Saturday) and Somavara Pradosham (Pradosham that occurs on Monday) are considered more auspicious. The various Pradosham observances include fasting, prayers and rituals which are specifically built to work better with the karma busting energies. Pradosham is a period of importance to Lord Siva and offering prayers to the Lord during this period is believed to free a person from negativeness.

Three levels of Pradosham

The karma released during a Pradosham is dependent on its energy level, which varies with the days in a month. Depending on which day of the month it occurs, Pradosham is classified into three different levels.
All Pradoshams occur in the evening, between 1 to ½ hours before and right up to the moment of sunset. Thus, smaller energy level Pradoshams occur every evening at this time (between 1-1/2 hours before and right up to the sunset).
The middle energy level Pradoshams occur two days before Full Moon (Purnima) or New Moon (Amavasya) and takes place twice in a month. As per the Hindu lunar calendar, it falls on the 13th day of each lunar fortnight, happening in both Shukla Paksha (waxing phase) and Krishna Paksha (waning phase).
The larger energy level Pradosham is that when a 13th moon day befalls on Saturday. As per Vedic Astrology Sani (Saturn) is the Lord of Karma which delivers difficulties and teaches lessons that ultimately help a person to refine his character. Observing the auspicious Saturday Pradosham helps in the process of evolving our souls. Since Lord Siva is believed to have more influence on Sani, prayers are offered to the Lord on this day which can cause the planet loosen some karmic bonds.

Saturn Pradosham

Saturn or Sani is one of the most powerful planets whose influence can change the life/destiny of a person. The planet remains in a zodiac for a period of 2 ½ years and its influence on that zodiac or house will be very intense. Since Saturday is the day ruled by Sani, Saturday Pradosham (Sani Pradosh) becomes more auspicious. Observance of Saturday Pradosham, helps a person to remove his bad karma caused by the malefic effects of planets and bestows him with the grace of Lord Siva and Sani.

Lord Sani or Saneeshwara, one among the nine celestial Gods or Navagrahas, is believed to be the inflicter of troubles and ill effects. People use to observe fast on Saturdays to overcome the adversities inflicted by Sani and when a Pradosh falls on a Saturday it is considered more auspicious. With much more devotion, people observe vrat on Sani Pradosh and offers special prayers to Lord Siva.

Somavara Pradosham

Someshwara is one of the names of Lord Shiva, which means one who adores the Crescent Moon (the Soma). Somavara or Monday is the day ruled by Moon and is auspicious for Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi. It is believed that offering poojas on Monday Pradoshams helps a person to get the blessings of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi, and to eliminate the malefic effects of Chandra Dosha (afflicted or debilitated Moon).

Also, on Saturday and Monday Pradoshams, people seek the blessing of Rudra – a  fierce form of Siva. It is believed that the grace of Rudra eliminates diseases, enemies and negativeness within a person and from outside elements.

Pradosham Fasting

Observing vrat or fasting is a major religious ritual to discipline one’s mind for better consciousness. Abstaining food for long hours before worshiping God is a way of liberation, by removing negative karma and attaining physical purification. Pradosham vrat or fasting is also meant to cleanse the body from negative vibrations and to attain control over our mind.
The Pradosham fast is observed from sunrise to sunset, which ends with the evening puja and worship of Lord Siva. The evening puja and prayers are conducted in the Pradosham time (1.5 hours before sunset and 1 hour after sunset). All these rituals help to remove negative thoughts and to inflict divine thoughts in mind.
Most of the devotees who observe Pradosham fast refrain from food and have only water, while some observe a partial fast, consuming fruits and water. Those who observe strict fasting would have only the Prasad after offering evening prayers and restart the usual diet from the next morning only. During the fasting time, devotees use to visit Siva temple too.

Pradosham fast is specially observed by women who long for children. According to Siva Purana, those who observe Pradhosham fast will be blessed with wealth, children, happiness and honor.
Energies in Pradosham period

Each day of the week is believed to have different energy vibrations during the Pradosham time, as mentioned below.

Sunday (Bhaanu Vaara Pradosha) - Peace to all
Monday (Indu Vaara Pradosha) - Positive thinking
Tuesday (Bhauma Vaara Pradosha) - Prosperity to all
Wednesday (Saumya Vaara Pradosha) - Blessings with progeny and knowledge
Thursday (Guru Vaara Pradosha) - Blessings through the Pitru's and elimination of dangers
Friday (Bhrgu Vaara Pradosha) – Nullifying opposition
Saturday (Sthira Vaara Pradosha) - Elevation or getting back the lost wealth.

The energy level associated with a Pradosham is also dependent on various other astrological features.
A Pradosham that falls on any Saturday is considered more auspicious and is called Sthira Pradosham which is categorized as Uttama Sthira Pradosham, Madhyama Sthira Pradosham and Adhama Sthira Pradosham. Uttama Sthira Pradosham or the one with maximum power falls in the months Medam, Edavam, Karkadikom and Vruschikam, during Shukla Paksha or growing lunar cycle. A Madhyama Sthira Pradosham is the one with normal power which falls in the months Medam, Edavam, Karkadikom and Vruschikam, during Krishna Paksha or diminishing lunar cycle. The Sthira Pradoshams with minimum power are those falling on other Saturdays and are called Adhama Sthira Pradoshams. In addition to these the Pradosham falling on Kumbha/Maasi/Magha month (February – March) before Maha Sivaratri is regarded much auspicious and is called Maha Pradosham.

Astrology in the Srimad Bhagavad Gita

The Srimad Bhagavad Gita, the Vedas and the Upanishads, apart from their spiritual content, also have an astrological angle to them. As the sixth Vedanga, astrology gives a new dimension to these sacred works and helps in understanding their complete meaning. The other Vedangas Siksha, Nirukta, Chandas, Kalpa and Vyakarana are usually taught as a means to interpret the Vedas and the other Sastras but astrology has never been seen in this light. As the eye of the Vedas it gives insights into their essence and hidden meaning. The Srimad Bhagavad Gita carries astrological clues and principles in each of its Slokas.

An effort has been made in this paper to explain the Gita Slokas from the astrological perspective based on lectures on the subject by Mr. A.B. Shukla, National President, Indian Council of Astrological Sciences.
Arjuna asks many questions of Lord Krishna in the Gita with the Lord answering them. But on one occasion Lord Krishna Himself asks a question of Arjuna and without waiting for his answer goes on to say more. The reason for this is hidden in the Lord's question itself.

कुतस्वा करमलमिदं विषमे समुपास्थितम् |

अनार्यजुष्टमस्वर्ग्यमकीर्तिकरमर्जुन ||

How has the dejection come upon you at this difficult hour? It is shunned by noble souls. It is disgraceful and it does not bring heaven or fame to you.

The Lord identifies in Arjuna, a special personality among the Pandavas (who were fighting for Dharma). As the backbone of the Pandava forces, Arjuna has an important role in the upcoming war. He is, on the one hand, one of the best warriors but also mentally disturbed on the battlefield. He is the only one who refuses to fight for Dharma for reasons which are not convincing. The Lord uses this opportunity to guide Arjuna with the ultimate knowledge in the form of the Gita.
Each word in this Sloka can be said to represent one of the planets. An important planet that is missing here holds the answer to the question.

Kuthastva can be understood as from whence such a thought has come or the curiosity or intention to delineate a problem which is shown by Mercury.

Kashmalam which means dejection or depression in the manas (mind) which is now expressing unwarranted attachment represented by the Moon.

Vishame samupasthitam meaning a difficult time or an inappropriate time shown by Saturn who controls time.

Anaryajushtam or na arya jushtam which is an act which is not becoming of an Arya or a noble man. Arya means an expert, competent and capable person and Anarya would therefore mean one devoid of these qualities. Competence is a moulding of hard work signified by Mars.

Aswargyam means that which does not lead to heaven or comforts and luxuries. Comforts and luxuries are governed by Venus.

Akirtikaram is the opposite of fame or disgrace or something that is not praiseworthy. Since fame is governed by the Sun, this term is covered by the Sun.

A careful examination of these terms shows that the important planet Jupiter is missing. Jupiter who symbolizes the Guru is a synonym for Gnana or wisdom. Had that wisdom been present in Arjuna where would there have been the need for the Gita?
Though Arjuna looks upon Lord Krishna as his true philosopher, guide and Guru he has not surrendered completely at the Lord's feet and still harbors many doubts in his mind. It takes all of seventeen chapters (2nd to 18th) to clear these doubts which include showing him the Vishwaroopa or Universal Form of the Lord (Chapter XI). The Lord does not leave any question unanswered which ultimately leads to Arjuna accepting Him his Guru in the complete sense of the term when he says,

नष्टो मोहः स्मृर्तिलब्धात्वत्प्रसादान्मयाच्चुत |

स्थितोഽस्मि गतसन्देहः करिष्ये वचनं तव  ||

                                                                                  XVIII-73 ||

By your grace my delusion has fled and I have gained wisdom. My confusion is gone and I shall do your bidding.
When all the doubts of Arjuna get resolved and he completely surrenders himself to the Lord, the purpose of the Gita is fulfilled at which point Lord Krishna stops his sermon.

Astrologically Sloka II-2 which has Jupiter missing in it would mean that the absence of any connection between Jupiter or the 9th lord (equivalent of Jupiter) with the Ascendant or the Ascendant lord would lead to confusion or lack of wisdom The importance of Jupiter is shown in this Sloka.

All the planets appear as malefic since they are associated with negative emotions but they can become benefic if associated with the favorable counterpart of these emotions. For example, arva (noble men) can depict the benefic aspect of Mare while anarya can show the malefic aspect of Mars. In fact, at this stage all the six planets are not in a good state and there is no contribution from Jupiter too. But as the Gita progresses, Arjuna's doubts and delusion start to melt down and in the aid by the grace of his Guru, he attains complete wisdom and gets enlightened.

This principle embedded in the Gita can be applied to horoscopes.
  • If Jupiter and Mercury have friendly relationship and they are placed in a Kendra, Trikona or connected with the Ascendant or the lord of the Ascendant, the native will have good analytical ability. Example: Chart 1 of Vinayak Damodar Sawarkar. If the relationship between the two is not good, then the opposite result holds good.
chart 1

A similar combination can also be seen in Queen Victoria's horoscope (Chart 2).
  • If Jupiter and Saturn enjoy a friendly relationship and they are placed in a Kendra, Trikona or connected with the Ascendant or the Ascendant lord, the native could be beyond the scope of time or in other words, be a man of vision. Example: Guru Nanak (Chart 3).

chart 2
  • If Jupiter and Mars' enjoy a friendly relationship and are placed in a Kendra, Trikona or connected with the Ascendant or the Ascendant lord, the native will be endowed with valor, dexterity and competence.  Example: Aurangzeb (Chart 4).
  • If Jupiter and Venus have a friendly relationship and are placed in a Kendra, Trikona or connected with the Ascendant or the Ascendant lord, the native enjoys all pleasures and luxuries. Example: Akbar (Chart 5).
chart 3

If Jupiter and the Moon are in a friendly relationship and are placed in a Kendra, Trikona or connected with the Ascendant or the Ascendant lord, one has full control over his mind and is not swayed by worldly pain or pressures and understands how to surrender to God. Example: Ramakrishna Paramahamsa (Chart 6).
